The United States Supreme Court has termed the constellation of parental interests "essential" (Meyers v. Nebraska (1923) 262 U.S. 390, 399), among the "basic civil rights of man" (Skinner v. Oklahoma (1942) 316 U.S. 535, 541), and "[r]ights far more precious ... than property rights." (May v. Anderson (1953) 345 U.S. 528, 533 and Walker v. Superior Court (1988) 47 Cal.3d 112, 134-135).

The right to "conceive and to raise one's children" is a basic, fundamental, and constitutionally-protected right. Stanley v. Illinois (1972) 405 U.S. 645, 658.)

"The interest of a parent in the companionship, care, custody, and management of his [her] children is a compelling one, ranked among the most basic of civil rights..." In re B. G., (1974) 11 Cal.3d 679, 688-689.)

"It is the intent of the Legislature that nothing in this section disrupt the family unnecessarily or intrude inappropriately into family life, prohibit the use of reasonable methods of parental discipline, or prescribe a particular method of parenting."

''I don't think people realize just how tenuous your hold on your children is," said Jim Wade, 37. "They don't have to prove anything. They can take your kids away on just suspicions."
